It's comme ci, comme ça in this case. I think some of the attention whoring stuff has merit, but at the same time, he wants to play this off as larping to prevent any real damage to his credibility occurring. That's why he goes silent for a while when you mention any of his DA favorites or the fact that Nazis would kill him at a moment's notice if they were to take power. The active acknowledgement and repeated backlash of his actions have caused him to go into momentary bouts of silence to try to ward off any attention by boring the instigators.
